2003, portable CD player, painted wood
The cerulean-painted fragments of violently shattered chairs are arranged in a spiral with a CD player at its center. From the speakers we hear the song form the 70's Schoolhouse Rock shorts Three is a Magic Number. The song has been slowed down, reducing the tone, consequently altering the meaning.
This piece is a metaphor for dysfunctional families. "A mama and a daddy had a little baby…" I wrestled with how I could make it clear to the viewer what the meaning was, and even now I'm not sure how clear it is, if at all. My conclusion was, though, that the piece has enough going on to keep the viewer engaged. Whether they get my meaning isn't crucial.
